“And then all hell broke loose.”

Narrator, Kung Pow

“Your mentor is upstairs,” Alan said, his voice carrying across the club’s music like a wolf’s growl on the forest wind.  “I’d see to him, if I were you.”

Everett glanced back at Marilyn on the steps, then to Sydney and Eliot on the floor.  He looked to where Matt had Armand and Donovan cornered.  He took a deep breath.  “We won’t back down,” he said.  “We came here knowing what could happen.  We won’t let you harm innocent civilians.”

“No innocents are going to be harmed,” Alan said.  “Nor will any civilians.”

“Yeah, that’s what Dante was saying,” Everett said, thumbing back to the semi-conscious knight on the floor.  “Care to expound?”

Alan smiled.  “No.”

Through the doors came bursting Ryoko.  Ignoring the state of the club and the mindless dancers along the sidelines of the dance floor, she rushed to Alan’s side.  She leaned close, whispering frantically.  Everett noted her lack of a katana and Alan’s growing horror, amused at both.  “They’re what?” Alan suddenly gawked.

As he spoke, the sound of a shotgun blast echoed through the open doors, startling Marilyn.  Everett smirked and turned to Alan, unable to keep from chuckling at the incredulous look on his face.  “They’re what?!” he exclaimed.

As if on cue, Roland and Ledger strolled into the club, Ledger reloading his shotgun.  “Guess who just broke your little Knightspeak transmitters, dick?” Roland called.

“And guess how long ‘til the cops get here?” Ledger added.  He aimed his shotgun at the central speaker system in the club, firing with abandon.  The speakers erupted in a spray of sparks, a loud reverb resonating across the club.  Alan and Ryoko leapt back, the teams of knights polarizing to each side of the club.

As the shower of sparks died down, the crowd came to life.  Aware for the first time of the armed figures on either side of the room, they stared in horror, staying still out of fear.  “Fall back,” Alan said desperately.  He turned and looked to the remaining handful of Red knights.  “Fall back!”

“Get them!” Everett yelled.  To his astonishment, the crowd erupted in panic and began to flood past them on their way out.  He watched them run, then joined the Blue knights as they chased down the retreating Reds.

In the rear of the building, Alan shoved through the heavy metal door, sprinting for the rental car parked to the side of the building.  He signaled the doors to unlock and threw open the front seat, Ryoko diving into the passenger’s side door.  Eliot and Matt, guiding Dante, rushed for the rear.  The five got into the compact car and Alan shifted into gear.  Sending the wheels into a spin, he pulled out and shot forward down the alley.

Matt coughed desperately, out of breath.  “Geez, I didn’t think they’d be that tough.”

“We had the outnumbered two-to-one,” Alan yelled, banging on the steering wheel.  “How the hell did they manage to survive?”  He calmed himself with a few meditative breaths and slowed the car as they pulled out onto the street.  He checked the rearview mirror.  “Where are the others?” he asked.

Matt and Eliot turned and looked out the rear mirror, seeing the street empty.  “I think we might be the only ones that got away,” Matt observed fearfully.

Ryoko stared out the back, then turned to Alan.  “Can we still do this?” she asked, uncertain.

“We’ve got all the materials in the trunk,” Alan said.  “Even the flag.”

“But can we take on a whole base?  By ourselves?” Ryoko asked with disbelief.

Alan looked in the rearview mirror again, still seeing the empty road.  “Yes,” he said, swallowing his fear.  He stared forward, driving with a purpose, guiding them down the road.  “We can still do this.  If it’s just five knights against the entire base,” he said.  He looked in the rearview mirror at his team.  “Then that will be a whole lot of out-numbered Marines.”
