Aught To
Be
Nothing moved in the house of
Morgan’s shattered life. On the slick, wet floor, Ledger
stood with his arm extended, his sawed-off shotgun aimed directly between the
eyes of Rebecca. The young woman,
petrified, stood stock still, barely able to bring herself to breathe. Around the two, the knights of every
persuasion were delicate in their reactions. “I have been lied to in every way,
in every fashion, by every type of person,” Ledger said coldly, staring down
his gun at Rebecca. “One could say I’m
a bit of a connoisseur of lies. And
you are good, but not flawless, at telling them.” “What are you talking about?” she
whispered in terror. “I second that, what are you
talking about?” Edgar said, stepping away from Edgar and Sydney, stepping
halfway towards Ledger. “He’s lost it!” Erik
exclaimed. He looked at all the
knights as an amorphous whole. “You’ve
all lost it! This is lunacy!” “Could someone please shut him
up?” “I will not be…” Erik started to
shout when he found Ulysses at his throat.
The long blade of Armand’s brand ran across his neck, its tip rubbing
the same point Everett’s katana had been at.
“Get that thing away from me,” he said forcibly. “You’re hobbling and there’re more
of us than there are of you,” Armand said simply. “I’ll lower my sword if you like, but if
you say another word, you’re going to get hurt.” He lowered Ulysses slowly, but his stare
didn’t waver. Erik shook his head. “It was a mistake to bring you Blue and
Silver.” “It was a mistake for us to accept
it,” “She’s lied to us,” he said,
taking his eyes away from Rebecca for the first time. “You’ve sold me,” “The top of what?” she pleaded. “How’d you get cut up?” he asked
harmlessly in a calming tone. “The knights,” Rebecca said. “If the knights where really here,
Blue or Red, they’d have done more than cut you,” Ledger insisted, his eyes a
harsh glare on her. “They’d’ve taken
you, or they’d’ve killed you or they’d’ve of left you alone. But they won’t slice up your forearms a
bit.” “It was glass,” she said. “The recording studio’s a mess.” “That much is true,” Edgar pointed out
from behind Rebecca, startling her. “They wanted to destroy everything Morgan
held dear,” she said, on the verge of crying again. “They were tearing up the place.” “Then why’d they stop?” Roland asked,
standing with Armand and Erik by the kitchen entrance. “If they wanted to destroy this place, why
didn’t they just set it on fire? Why’d
they go through all of this?” “I don’t know!” she exclaimed. “I’m not a knight.” Everett stood with Ledger before
Rebecca, the two black knights occupying her perspective. He calmed himself with a sigh and took a
step back from the situation. He
walked to the far side of the room where Marilyn had positioned herself near
the remains of Morgan’s TV.
“Thoughts?” he asked quietly, his back turned to Rebecca. “I don’t know,” she asked. “How much would Morgan have told her?” “I’m not sure how much Morgan even
knew these days,” “I hate it, but I think Ledger’s
right,” she said. “I don’t think she’s
lying or anything, but something’s not adding up.” |
