“This is Old Downtown,” began Everett as he stood before the others.  Situated in his living room, the five other knights split their attention between him and the urban map on the coffee table in front of him.  “This area comprises about eight square miles of inner-city squalor.  The lowest property values are in this area and one out of every two businesses are closed and/or abandoned.”

“Which makes it unclear why anyone goes there,” Roland said from the couch between Armand and Ledger.

“The clubs,” Sydney answered in the farther chair from Everett.  “There are three clubs in this area, all of which are really popular because they’re big.  The Red Carpet has five distinct different dance rooms, almost like their own little mini clubs, in addition to pool and an indoor volleyball court.”

“They can get really cheap rent on really big spaces,” Everett explained.

“And then spend the money on bouncers and security,” Ledger grumbled.  “I hate clubs.”

“You hate clubs?” Armand remarked.  “The first time I went to a club in this city, I saw a guy get shot and ended up getting into a fight.”

“Old Downtown’s got a lot to recommend to it if you’re a criminal,” Everett explained.  “We all know this.  We’ve all been down there.”

“Yeah, this is where we bailed out Marilyn and her gang of nobodies from the Hand of the Brotherhood,” Ledger said.  “We ended up having to dispose of over…”

“I’d rather not re-imagine the body-count,” Edgar said solemnly to Ledger.

“Here’s what we’re going to do,” Everett said.  “Armand, you’re taking the northern point here,” he said with a gesture at the map.  “The only thing open at night is a Laundromat and an adult video store, but there’s a pawn shop and a couple of other businesses.”

“Edgar, you get west,” he went on, moving his hand.  “This is where two of the clubs are, Red Carpet and Sixty-Nine.  There will be a crowd, but because it’s Tuesday, I imagine it’ll still be sparse enough that there could be some muggings to get the Rose’s attention.”

“Joy,” the older man said, sipping a thinly-poured glass of brandy.

Sydney, south,” Everett said.  “You’re taking Downtown Motor Speedway.”

“Whoa,” Armand said, sitting up.  “Everett, Sydney with all due respect, that place is dangerous.  That’s a near-straight back road with almost no streetlights where the gangs street race.  That’s not just rife with crime; thugs are crawling all over the place.”

“Yeah,” Ledger said.  “Let Sydney go with you and I’ll take the Speedway.”

“Well, while I’d normally chew you all out,” the dame said before looking at Everett, “I want in on the Rose, so that’s fine with me.”

“Okay,” Everett said.  “Ledger, you get the Speedway.  Roland, you’re at the parking deck.”

            “Which one?” he asked.

“There’s only one in Old Downtown,” Armand answered.  “You’re thinking of…”

“New Downtown?” Roland asked with a smartass grin.

            Armand smirked.  “I guess.”

“Sydney and I are going to station ourselves at Club Perdition,” Everett explained, pointing towards the center of the map.  “We’ll keep an eye out there, while you guys are doing the same at your locations.  Stay in contact the entire time.”

“Yo,” Armand asked, holding up his hand.  “I know all of you’ve got that nifty walkie-talkie feature on your phones so everyone can chat, but I’m still working with the bargain basement model I got with my service plan.”

“Then just call me if you see anything,” Everett said.  “Once the Rose appears, you guys let me know.  It is imperative to stay put.  If the Rose starts to flee, we need to know in what direction he ultimately escapes to.  Moreover, if Sydney and I lose him, we’ll need eyes on the ground to help us find him again.”

“And you’re sure he’s going to show?” Ledger asked.

Everett sighed with a smile.  “As sure as I can be when it comes to tracking vigilantes with a flair for dramatics.”
